January 27 marks the 15th anniversary of the death of the late Professor Jan Baszkiewicz, PhD – a lawyer, historian, and political scientist, an outstanding scholar and thinker who was associated with our Faculty for decades.Professor Jan Baszkiewicz was born on January 3, 1930, in Warsaw. In 1951, he graduated in law from the University of Warsaw, and four years later he obtained his doctoral degree. In 1956, he began his academic work at the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1965, he received the title of associate professor, and in 1972 he obtained the title of full professor. From 1957 to 1968, he conducted teaching activities at the University of Wrocław, and from 1968 to 1973 at the University of Silesia. From 1973, he was once again associated with Warsaw and began working at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Warsaw. He was a professor at the University of Warsaw, the University of Wrocław, and the University of Silesia. Professor Jan Baszkiewicz was the author of numerous scholarly publications and books in the fields of history, the history of ideas, and reflections on the state and power. His most important works include, among others, History of Political and Legal Doctrines, General History of State Systems, Anatomy of Bonapartism, The Youth of Universities, and New Man, New Nation, New World: Mythology and Reality of the French Revolution. Above all, however, Professor Baszkiewicz was an expert on the history of France and the French Revolution, to which he devoted decades of research.He served on the Central Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles. He was a mentor for many doctoral and habilitation theses. He was honored with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Pedagogical University of Kraków, the University of Wrocław, the Jagiellonian University, and the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. In 2005, he received the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta. On behalf of the Dean’s authorities and the entire community of our Faculty, flowers were laid at Professor Baszkiewicz’s grave by members of the Committee for the Professor Jan Baszkiewicz Award and representatives of the Faculty. On behalf of Professor Katarzyna Kołodziejczyk, Professor Bartłomiej Zdaniuk spoke, recalling the immense contributions of the late Professor to our Faculty and to Polish scholarship as a whole.
