HISTORY OF THE FACULTY OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

The traditions of political science education in Warsaw are much longer than the history of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw (formerly the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, UW). The first School of Political Science was established in 1917.

In 1967, the Institute of Political Science was established within the then Faculty of Philosophy, UW, building upon the staff of the previously existing extra-faculty unit, the Study of Political Science, UW. In 1968, as part of organizational changes at the university, political science, along with philosophy, sociology, and economics, was transferred to the Faculty of Social Sciences, UW.

The Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, UW, is a continuation (since September 1, 2016) of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, UW, which began its operations in 1975. This unit offered education in journalism and political science. The 1970s marked a period of dynamic development for the Faculty and the expansion of its internal structure with the establishment of the Institute of International Relations in 1976 and the Institute of Social Policy in 1977. In 2012, the Institute of European Studies was created.

The new name of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, UW, is a consequence of the Institute of Journalism’s departure from its structure.

By decision of the Faculty Council, as of July 1, 2019, the individual Institutes comprising the Faculty ceased to exist, namely: The Institute of Political Science (existing since 1967), The Institute of International Relations (1976), The Institute of Social Policy (1977), and The Institute of European Studies (2012). In their place,  15 research departments were established.
