International Relations (Master’s degree, full-time)

Program Description

International Relations is a degree program that has been successfully offered at the University of Warsaw for over forty years. Its appeal is evidenced by the fact that it is the most popular choice among foreign students enrolling in Poland. At the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, international students make up about 10% of all students in the International Relations program.

Faculty members in the International Relations program participate in numerous projects funded by the European Union. Their main areas of research include international politics, diplomacy and foreign policy, international law and institutions, international political economy and business, as well as multiculturalism in international relations and studies on Africa, Latin America, India, and China. The faculty has established academic partnerships with universities in Georgia, China, Brazil, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Kosovo. Thanks to agreements signed with dozens of universities in the European Union, every student has the opportunity to study abroad. International relations students also travel to Russia, India, Nepal, the Republic of Korea, Israel, and the United States.

The University of Warsaw’s location in the capital, its national prestige, and its experienced faculty guarantee a high standard of education. A degree in international relations has great market value, ensuring employment both in Poland and abroad.

The master’s degree program in international relations is intended for individuals holding a bachelor’s, engineering, or master’s degree in any field of study.

After the first semester of their studies, students choose one of four specializations:

• security and strategic studies,
• contemporary diplomacy,
• international trade policy,
• Regional and Global Studies (starting in the third semester—students choose a specialization from among the following tracks: American Studies, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa).

Classes are held Monday through Friday on the Main Campus of the University of Warsaw, in the Auditorium Building, formerly the University of Warsaw Library (26/28 Krakowskie Przedmieście St.), and at the Zamoyski Palace (69 and 67 Nowy Świat Street).

Graduates possess interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of international relations—more extensive than that acquired in a bachelor’s program—particularly in the areas of international economic, social, political, and legal issues. They are familiar with the theory and practice of international relations, as well as the theory and practice of political and economic decision-making.

Graduates possess analytical and methodological skills that enable them to take on positions requiring informed, rational, and accurate assessments and opinions, and have internalized a sense of personal responsibility and initiative. Graduates are prepared to work in institutions and companies involved in international trade, international organizations and institutions, government agencies dealing with foreign and economic policy, research and expert centers focusing on international relations, diplomacy, and the mass media.

Graduates have developed a habit of lifelong learning and professional development and are prepared to take on research challenges and pursue doctoral studies.
