Program Description

The European Politics and Economics program is designed for students interested in **economic and political integration, the functioning of the European Union, EU law, and the European internal market**—particularly in the economic, financial, and policy spheres. The program provides an understanding of the structure, powers, and operations of the European Union, as well as its impact on member states and their mutual relations.

What makes this program unique is that it is jointly administered by the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw and the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw. **As a result of this collaboration, the curriculum places an emphasis on the economic foundations and consequences of European integration. The extensive economic component clearly distinguishes this program from other European studies programs offered in the country. **The program is taught entirely in English.

Students in the European Politics and Economics program have the opportunity to learn from renowned European studies scholars, political scientists, economists, and lawyers—both theorists and practitioners. The faculty includes instructors with experience working in government ministries, think tanks, foreign missions, the media, and the business sector.

The program provides knowledge about the causes and course of European integration in its economic, political, and institutional-legal dimensions. Students in this program learn about the successive stages of the integration process, analyze historical texts (political speeches, declarations, legal acts), trade databases, and various concepts for the EU’s development, and forecast and interpret the opportunities, challenges, and threats facing the organization. Students are prepared to critically assess the political and economic consequences of European integration, as well as to participate in the ongoing discussion regarding the ultimate shape of a united Europe and the territorial boundaries of the Union. Students also acquire knowledge of international economics, the functioning of trade, and international capital, labor, and currency markets. They learn about the processes of monetary and economic integration within the EU and their implications for private and public entities. Students participate in workshop-style classes, simulations of EU institutional operations, Oxford-style debates, and roundtable discussions. A variety of audiovisual tools are also used during classes (SurveyMonkey, Kahoot, Playfactile, Wordart.com, Prezi, Bookcreator, etc.).

Graduates of the program possess a basic understanding of the functioning of the diverse and multifaceted spheres of European politics, enabling them to: understand the dynamics of political, economic, legal, and social changes at the national and supranational levels; develop decision-making strategies; analyzing the positions, attitudes, and behaviors of participants in integration processes, their mutual relationships, and their interactions with other actors (stakeholders) in social and economic life.

Students also gain knowledge of the economic aspects of the European Union’s functioning and the EU policies being implemented. The program provides an interdisciplinary education in the social, economic, and legal sciences within the field of European studies.

Employment Outlook

The program prepares students—both in terms of subject matter and language skills—to conduct business in the EU market, work in lobbying and consulting firms, working in public administration at the national and local government levels, serving in official capacities within EU institutions and agencies as well as international organizations, and working in nongovernmental organizations, the media, and cultural institutions engaged in European marketing activities.
