Author meeting: “Negotiator of great history. Jerzy Sułek on the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Poland and Polish diplomacy after 1989 in conversation with Alicja Curanović”
On Wednesday, January 14, at 5:00 p.m. in room 317 of the Auditorium Building of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, there will be a meeting with the author devoted to the analysis of Polish eastern policy during the transition period. The starting point for the discussion will be a publication by Scholar Scientific Publishing House, documenting the key diplomatic processes of the Third Republic of Poland.
The book is a record of the testimony of Prof. Jerzy Sułek, who, as a leading negotiator of Polish diplomacy, participated in shaping new international legal foundations in relations with neighbors. The publication focuses on the process of withdrawing Russian Federation troops from Polish territory and on the evolution of state administration in the face of rapid changes in the international environment after 1989.
The main theme of the conversation is the background to the preparation of the agreements signed on May 22, 1992, in Moscow. These documents regulated the status of the armed forces of the former USSR and set a timetable for their withdrawal, which was a condition for Poland to regain full sovereignty in the sphere of security.
The publication analyzes the decision-making processes from the perspective of a practitioner who led 34 rounds of negotiations. It covers not only relations with Russia, but also the process of German reunification and the building of new structures for the Polish foreign service.
Prof. Jerzy Sułek – political scientist and diplomat, habilitated doctor of political science. Between 1989 and 1993, he was a key negotiator of treaties with Germany and the Soviet Union. He specializes in contemporary international relations and Polish-German relations.
Prof. Alicja Curanović – political scientist, professor at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw. Her research interests include Russian foreign policy, with particular emphasis on identity and religious factors in international relations.
The introductory remarks will be delivered by Prof. Roman Kuźniar, and the discussion will be moderated by Dr. Szymon Kardaś.
