Book launch dedicated to Dr. Marcin Sokołowski’s book “National Identity of Macedonians in the Process of European Integration”

On May 25, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 5, there will be a book launch for Dr. Marcin Sokołowski’s book, in which the author describes the impact of the European integration process on Macedonian national identity, as shaped by the positions of neighboring countries, by examining the complex Macedonian-Greek and Macedonian-Bulgarian relations. He discusses the results of his research on the national identity of Macedonians, which he conducted from 2016 to 2018. It presents an analysis of international documents and agreements with Greece and Bulgaria. It also characterizes the opportunities and threats related to the European integration process and its impact on Macedonian identity from the perspective of the country’s future membership in the European Union. It also highlights the challenges to this identity posed by neighboring countries—Greece and Bulgaria. Due to Greece’s demands, Macedonia—as the only EU candidate country—faced the dilemma of having to change the country’s constitutional name, as well as the names of over a hundred state institutions. Furthermore, the Greek and Bulgarian authorities have questioned the existence of both the Macedonian nation and its language.
