Ceremony of conferring the title of doctor honoris causa upon Professor Adam Daniel Rotfeld
The procedure for conferring the title of doctor honoris causa upon Professor Adam Daniel Rotfeld was initiated by the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies on the basis of the Professor’s outstanding academic achievements, public activity, and international commitment to peace, security, and dialogue.
Professor Adam Daniel Rotfeld is one of the most distinguished Polish scholars of international relations, European security, arms control, and international law. For over 30 years, he was affiliated with the Polish Institute of International Affairs, and from 1991 to 2002 he served as Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. He has lectured at prestigious universities in Europe, the United States, Australia, Japan, and Ukraine.
In his public service, Professor Rotfeld held positions including Under-Secretary and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, and in 2005, Minister of Foreign Affairs. He also served as a member of the National Security Council, the CSCE Chairman’s Representative for the resolution of the conflict in Transnistria, a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament, and the NATO Group of Experts preparing the Alliance’s new Strategic Concept.
In her opening remarks, Professor Katarzyna Kołodziejczyk, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, emphasized that Professor Rotfeld’s achievements are of particular significance for both scholarship and the practice of international life. She noted that the Professor combines intellectual independence with active participation in public life, and that his stance serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue, responsibility, and cooperation in building a lasting international order.
By resolution of 25 February 2026, the Senate of the University of Warsaw conferred upon Professor Adam Daniel Rotfeld the title of doctor honoris causa of the University of Warsaw after reviewing the evaluations by Professor Marek Belka, Professor Andrzej Mania, and Professor Hanna Suchocka. The promoter of the proceedings was Professor Roman Kuźniar, who emphasized that Professor Adam Rotfeld has become something of a thinker with regard to the sphere of security and international relations, as well as Poland’s security and foreign policy.
The conferral of the honorary doctorate upon Professor Adam Daniel Rotfeld is an expression of the highest recognition for his academic achievements, public service, and consistent action on behalf of peace, security, and international cooperation.
