Invitation to a guest lecture: “Is EU reform necessary for Ukraine to become a member?”

The Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw cordially invites you to a guest lecture by Dr. Jarosław Pietras. The event will focus on the key challenges facing the European Union in the context of its planned expansion.

The prospect of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union raises fundamental questions about the Community’s readiness to accept a new member. Are the current institutional framework and decision-making mechanisms sufficient? Is a profound reform of the treaties necessary? Our guest, who combines many years of academic experience with practical experience at the highest levels of EU and national administration, will answer these questions.

Dr. Jarosław Pietras has been affiliated with the University of Warsaw as a faculty member for nearly three decades and currently serves as a visiting professor in the Department of European Economic Studies. His distinguished professional career includes key positions in Polish governments from 1990 to 2006, where he served, among other roles, as Secretary of State for European Affairs and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Finance.
On the international stage, he is best known for his many years as Director-General at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, a position he held from 2008 to 2020.
