On December 11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. , the first concert, titled “Gamelan: Music and Dance of Java,” will take place in the Prof. Jan Baszkiewicz Auditorium in the WNPISM Auditorium Building .
On behalf of Katarzyna Kołodziejczyk, Ph.D., Prof., Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, and Prof. Małgorzata Karpińska, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Cultural and Art Studies at the University of Warsaw, we cordially invite you to the first musical event in the“Politics of Sound” series.
This is yet another initiative by Our Departments, resulting in unique artistic events that combine music with reflection on politics. Joint concert projects create a space where art, knowledge, and cultural sensitivity converge, demonstrating how diverse forms of expression can intertwine and complement one another. We are delighted that this year, too, we can invite you to events resulting from this inspiring collaboration. You can find the schedule for all concerts in the attached materials.
About the concert:
A gamelan is a traditional Javanese orchestra consisting mainly of gongs, metallophones, drums, and stringed instruments. Its sound, which forms a single, indivisible whole, requires close cooperation among the performers and has been a part of Javanese court and folk culture for centuries.
During the concert, we will hear the Kyai Kotowijoyo Gamelan, owned by the University of Warsaw, performed by participants in the Institute of Musicology’s workshops and the Warsaw Gamelan Group—an ensemble founded by graduates, including those who studied gamelan in Indonesia. The event will be accompanied by a performance of Javanese dances by Diah Anggraini-Martin.
