“Negotiator of Great History” – A New Publication on the Behind-the-Scenes of Polish Diplomacy After 1989

Scholar Academic Publishing House has released a unique book entitled “Negotiator of Great History. Jerzy Sułek on the Withdrawal of Soviet Troops from Poland and Polish Diplomacy After 1989 in Conversation with Alicja Curanović”. The publication constitutes an invaluable source of knowledge about the process of Poland regaining full sovereignty.

This publication reveals the behind-the-scenes of one of the greatest successes of Polish Eastern policy after 1989, namely Poland’s regaining of full sovereignty through the effective withdrawal of Soviet troops and the treaty-based regulation of bilateral relations with the Russian Federation. The book defies simple classifications. It takes the form of an extended interview with professional diplomat Jerzy Sułek, but at the same time contains archival materials and references to numerous sources. Thanks to this approach, it is accessible, yet maintains the rigour characteristic of academic works. This is not a typical biographical work. Personal threads appear, but the essence of the conversation concerns the processes of negotiating two key treaties regulating the relations of the Third Polish Republic with Russia. The politics of times of transformation and great historical processes are in the foreground.

Prof. Jerzy Sułek – political scientist and diplomat, holder of a habilitated doctorate in political science. In the years 1989–1993, he was a key negotiator of treaties with Germany and the Soviet Union. He specialises in contemporary international relations and Polish-German relations.

Prof. Alicja Curanović – political scientist, professor at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw. Her research interests include Russian foreign policy, with particular emphasis on identity and religious factors in international relations.
