Publication by WNPISM researchers in Routledge: “Democratization and De-democratization in Multi-level Democracy in Poland”
The prestigious publisher Routledge has released a multi-author monograph titled “Democratization and De-democratization in Multi-level Democracy in Poland.” The publication is the result of work by a research team comprising faculty members from the Department of Political Systems at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies (WNPiSM) of the University of Warsaw, the Department of Methodology of Political Research at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies (WNPiSM) of the University of Warsaw, the Department of Political Theory and Political Thought at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies (WNPiSM), University of Warsaw, and the Department of Sociology of the Individual and Social Relations at the Faculty of Social Sciences (WS), Adam Mickiewicz University.
This book is a comprehensive study of the processes of democratization and de-democratization that took place in Polish regional and local structures between 2010 and 2023. The authors analyzed the situation in selected provinces and cities, examining their relationship to the processes taking place at the national level.
Among other things, the paper argues that decentralization processes are a “double-edged sword” —they can be an opportunity to deepen democracy at the local level, but under specific conditions, they can also foster autocratic tendencies, widening the gaps in the quality of democracy across different levels of government.
