Report on the lecture by Prof. Alexandra Xanthaki, UN Special Rapporteur, at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw

Prof. Alexandra Xanthaki, the UN Special Rapporteur on cultural rights, visited the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw on December 3. The visit by this world-class expert opened the floor to a debate on the state of human rights in an era of global tensions.

The meeting in the Prof. Jan Baszkiewicz Auditorium was opened by Dr. hab. Łukasz Zamęcki, professor, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Management. The participants were also welcomed by Dr. Maciej Raś, Professor, Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Educational Quality at the University of Warsaw, and Dr. Hanna Schreiber, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, who outlined the thematic context of the visit and the significance of cultural rights in contemporary international debates.

The highlight of the visit was a lecture titled “Has Culture Already Lost to Populism? Defending Cultural Rights in Times of Global Insecurity”. In it, Prof. Xanthaki attempted to address the threats posed to cultural diversity and minority rights by the current wave of populism and global instability. The high turnout at the event was reflected in the lively discussion that concluded the meeting.
