The development of the IKONA system (Identification, Collection and Evaluation of Hostile Disinformation Operations in Cyberspace) has been completed. The system’s task is to detect and analyze disinformation on the internet. The tool uses artificial intelligence technologies and big data analysis to monitor content appearing online and identify potentially manipulative messages.
The system analyzes information published on social media and internet portals, among others. Thanks to its algorithms, it can detect patterns characteristic of disinformation campaigns, identify their sources, and observe how false narratives spread. For example, during work on the project, the team identified over 1,600 internet accounts that disseminated disinformation in Poland following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Prof. Wiesław Cetera, head of the project, gave an interview to the Polish Press Agency emphasizing that disinformation poses an increasing threat to public debate and social trust. Tools such as IKONA are intended to help respond more quickly to information manipulation and increase society’s resilience to false content online.
According to the agreement concluded with the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), the Ministry of Digitization has priority in using the IKONA system. However, if the ministry does not use the solution, IKONA may also be used by other organizations and business entities. Prof. Cetera would like his team’s solutions to serve as support for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in monitoring the country’s image, for NASK, or for fact-checking organizations.
We warmly congratulate the project leader, Prof. Wiesław Cetera, as well as our staff members on the team working on the IKONA system: Dr. Eng. Bartłomiej Moszoro, Dr. Eng. Dariusz Jarudź, Dr. Wioletta Matosek, and M.Sc. Eng. Piotr Celiński.
