Three new publications by Professor Anna Kurowska in prestigious international journals
Anna Kurowska, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, is the co-author of three new scholarly publications that have appeared in leading international journals. These publications are the result of research projects funded by the National Science Center.
The studies address issues in the fields of social policy, the sociology of work, and the dynamics of intrafamilial relationships.
An article titled “From formal rights to real opportunities: a meta-framework for understanding (non-)uptake of social entitlements” was published in the journal *Community, Work & Family *.
This study proposes a new approach to examining the mechanisms that explain the (non)use of various types of social entitlements (both benefits and services) by the recipients of those entitlements. By integrating previously scattered theoretical concepts drawn from distinct strands of the literature, this paper offers a theoretical framework for future research and a heuristic tool for public policymakers, supporting the design of effective social policies and strategies for their implementation.

An article titled “Work from home and shifting perceptions of career prospects among employees with children: the role of work- and family-related contexts”* was published in *Personnel Review*. The co-author of the paper is Agnieszka Kasperska, M.A. (Faculty of Economics, University of Warsaw).
The study highlights the importance of work and family circumstances in determining the positive impact of working from home on how mothers and fathers perceive their own career prospects. The findings are crucial for designing effective policies to support the professional development of remote workers, which should take into account the inequalities in opportunities and the risks that working from home poses to different groups of employees.

The journal *Work and Occupations* published an article titled “Unpredictable Work Schedules and Gender Divisions of Domestic Labor.” The publication is the result of extensive collaboration between Prof. Anna Kurowska and researchers from the University of British Columbia, Ball State University, Brock University, the University of Guelph, and the University of Hamburg.
The study shows how jobs with unpredictable working hours (e.g., on-call work) affect the division of responsibilities within the family. The results indicate that when the father works on an on-call basis and the mother works a regular schedule, she bears a greater burden of household and family responsibilities. However, when both parents work unpredictable schedules, the father’s involvement in childcare increases. This is the first global study to demonstrate the impact of unpredictable work schedules on the division of household and caregiving responsibilities within families.
