The Department of Internal Security was established in 2019 as a separate organizational unit within the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies. Previously, it operated within the Institute of Political Science under the name Department of Security Studies. The establishment of the Department was a response to the need for expert knowledge in the areas of crisis management, energy security, and new threats to the security of the state and the individual. The idea of establishing a separate department dedicated to security studies was linked to the research and teaching potential of a team of scholars focusing on non-military threats, as well as to the development of the Internal Security degree program. The Department’s goal is to bring together the academic community to advance the field of security studies and to chart new paths for research. A hallmark of the team’s activities is its organization of numerous conferences, seminars, and workshops—both national and international—dedicated, among other topics, to the issues surrounding security institutions. The Department’s faculty members are top-tier security experts representing diverse, often innovative, research approaches characteristic of the social sciences. The faculty’s research activities are combined with teaching as part of the University of Warsaw’s academic program and with the dissemination of knowledge through the media. The main areas of research include: mass event security, research on terrorism and radicalization, military security, energy security and energy policy, critical infrastructure protection, intelligence studies, internal security systems, crisis management, states of emergency, hybrid threats, and cybersecurity.
