DEPARTMENT OF STRATEGIC STUDIES AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

The department’s areas of interest include the processes, phenomena, relationships, and events that make up the international security environment. We pay particular attention to the likelihood of wars, conflicts, and other situations involving the use of force, as well as nonmilitary forms of violence in international relations. In this context, our research and analysis also focus on the policies of great powers, as well as those of states and non-state actors prone to the use of force. An important part of this research area involves the legal and institutional frameworks governing security and the use—or prohibition of the use—of force. This also applies to arms limitation and control. We are paying increasing attention to non-military aspects of security, particularly those related to energy and climate. A parallel area of research is Polish foreign and security policy, including the geopolitical determinants of the security of Poland and Europe. As the name of the department suggests (which was formed through the transformation of the department of strategic studies), the core of the department’s identity remains reflection on strategy, the scope of strategic studies and security studies, and their place within the field of international relations and, more broadly, political science.

Filarem współpracy instytucjonalnej z udziałem Katedry jest Konsorcjum Akademickich Zakładów Studiów Strategicznych (i Bezpieczeństwa), ustanowione w 2017 r. przez ówczesny Zakład Studiów Strategicznych ISM UW wraz z analogicznymi jednostkami z Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego i Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza. Do głównych obszarów zainteresowania Konsorcjum należą w szczególności analiza roli czynnika militarnego (oraz innych form konfrontacji) w procesie ewolucji porządku międzynarodowego oraz skuteczności instrumentarium instytucjonalnego służącego utrzymaniu bezpieczeństwa międzynarodowego. Pod szyldem Konsorcjum organizowane są coroczne spotkania w formule konferencji plenarnych oraz liczne wydarzenia ad hoc – debaty, dyskusje, seminaria. Służy ono również jako forum bieżącej wymiany informacji o aktywności badawczej zaangażowanych podmiotów.

Katedra współpracuje również z Fundacją im. Krzysztofa Skubiszewskiego, organizując m.in. doroczne sympozja naukowe, konkurs na najlepszą pracę magisterską dotyczącą polskiej polityki zagranicznej oraz inicjatywy wydawnicze (jak np. publikacja zbiorowa „Dziedzictwo Krzysztofa Skubiszewskiego w polityce zagranicznej RP” z 2020 r.).

Pracownicy Katedry indywidualnie współpracują z instytucjami życia publicznego, wchodzą w skład rad programowych fundacji i stowarzyszeń, pełnią funkcje doradcze (np. w Senacie RP), sporządzają ekspertyzy, zamawiane przez takie instytucje.
